Lavender Is Not a Monolith

Why the species and origin of your lavender matter more than you think.

April 8, 2026

Saying you like lavender is a little like saying you like wine. The gap between a high-altitude Provençal Lavandula angustifolia and a mass-distilled Lavandin grosso is the gap between a Burgundy and a boxed merlot.

Three lavenders worth knowing.

Lavandula angustifolia is what we use throughout Luna Sage. Soft, sweet, herbaceous. Calming and dream-friendly.

Lavandula latifolia (Spike Lavender) is sharper, more camphorous. Beautiful in respiratory blends, but too stimulating for the pillow.

Lavandin (a hybrid) is what fills most cleaning aisles. Bright, cheap, easily synthesized. We do not use it.
